Time to Catch Up

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

I lost touch with this site for over a year, and thought I should update some of the major things that have happened to me since then.  I’ve got a cold today so I figured it was the prefect time to sit down and write.

Lets see, after my last post I came back to PDX from a great time in Texas visiting my brother and his family.  A ton has happened since.

Probably the biggest life changer for me was open heart surgery in May of 2011.  Shortly after coming back from Texas I found out my aortic root had grown to a large, dangerous size and it would be a matter of time before I would have to have a major surgery.  More info on the condition can be found at www.iheartandy.com, a site I used to inform friends and raise money to pay for my surgery.

I guess the next biggest thing to happen after that was a major recovery cycle.  I was given strict parameters that I followed and I made sure I was working hard to get better.  It seems the new theory on recovery is to get up and be active.  At 24 hours I walked and at 72 hours I was out of the hospital. I had a lot of things on my side: great doctors, a great family, and great friends.  The support they showed was incredible it got me into a perfect mindset to recover.  My mom remade their guest bedroom to be a recovery area with a lowered bed I could get in and out of.  She also brought in a bench and chairs for people to visit on.  Some friends helped build a platform in my folk’s woods called Outpost 502.  It is a spot to relax and recover and was perfect over the summer.  At 6 weeks I got the ok to run and I never looked back.  I had already been walking 3+ miles and I was ready.  From the 6 week point, I set my sights on the Portland Marathon and followed a shortened training program in Hal Higdon’s book.  At 5 months post op I was able to complete the marathon, and do it in under 4 hours to reach my goal.  Since then, I have been running intermittently and I spoke for an hour at a heart surgery seminar about my experience and recovery.  My perspective on life has certainly changed and I try to take nothing for granted.  It was easy to say that before, but now I am taking action.

The next biggest steps I’ve made would be to simplify my life.  In a way, this will allow for more chaos, albeit controlled and focused.  I sold my brown Land Cruiser and bought a Honda Accord in Houston.  The trip back was incredible and I got to see some old friends and make new ones.  And now I have a car that needs very little attention, gets good mileage and allows me to focus on things I am more interested in.

When I got back I took out a loan and purchased an office.  It is similar to the old office trailer I operated out of, however I will own this one.  That is a huge distinction, in that I am able to set this one up exactly how it needs to be. The new office had been tailored to work with my current businesses (Guncoat Northwest, Hash Goods, Etc) and should have the capacity to create new ones.  More and more I am moving towards a small scale production/ prototype facility.  Some of the ideas that are refined at 502 Global can then be taken to a company that specializes in large scale production.

NoPDX Anticon 2010

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

A very Portland event.  I think there were over 1000 santas this year as we took over bars and restaurants in North Portland.  We even stopped by the mayor’s house and he came out and got the crowed pumped up with a megaphone.  Then they handed out egg nog and we marched away singing Christmas carols.

If you have never been to the Wooden Shoe Tulip fields you need to go! I’m not a real flower power type of guy, but the amount of color out there is amazing.

2010 Portland Urban Iditirod

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

This was the 9th Portland Urban Iditirod and my first. It was probably the craziest thing I have ever participated in Portland. Over 100 teams race through the streets of portland behind custom decorated shopping carts. As KATU news puts it: “There are no winners, there are no loses, there are just a bunch of belligerent people”

Our team was Big Buck Hunter Safari – Shoots even managed to track down fake guns for us!  We had two carts, the one I am pushing bellow and a mobile stripper pole (it got lots of looks)

And were off!

And we're off!

One of multiple stops for partying - this was under Grand Central

Looong run

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Just ran the longest run of my life yesterday!  We wound up going 13.1 miles to reach half marathon status.  All at the Leif Erickson trail in Forest Park.  What a bueatiful area and great place for a long run.

Gotta thank my buddy John Satterberg for keeping me going – I think he’ll be able to push me into a marathon distance.  Got some great food at Mother’s after wards – thank you Bryon and Matt!

13.1 miles – 1:43.57 Time, Pace of 7.56/ mile

And this post would be sooooo boring without pictures. So, here is my cold bath that I took after. I went naked, but next time will wear layers of shorts to protect my manhood from freezing off (bad).

Halloween 2009

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Well, not just Halloween but also the trips leading up to it.  I think those trips are the most fun of the season.

Marathon

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Ahh the Portland Marathon. 26.2 miles of torture through Portland’s streets. It was fun to see some of my friends run, as well as hand out beverages at mile 23.

Caitlin, my teammate from HTC and captain of Ragnar is in there somewhere. This was mile 6 at arounf 7:30AM. It was only 3 blocks from my house, so I figured the least I could do was get up and watch them.

On my way to the eastside to watch them at mile 23. Before this, I went home and sat on the couch for an hour while they kept running.

Why the big smile? Perhaps becasue shes done running. But also becasue she qualified for the BOSTON MARATHON!

After some long thought about long running I’m announcing that I want to run a marathon in 2010. So if your reading this, be sure to bug me to keep running. Lots.

Pickling 2009

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

We haven’t pickled in years, but my mom got inspired by a book called “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle” by Barbra Kingsolver in which a family lives off of homegrown food and meat for a year.  I’ve always had the meat covered, but vegetables, jam etc are not my forte.  More pictures soon to follow…
