The senseless killing of a family pet

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

Bellow are pictures of our beloved Tom turkey that was shot by an arrow. We put him down today because he was suffering and was going to die.

We have had these turkeys around our house in West Linn for about a decade as pets. They roam free on our property and around West Linn.

I called the sheriff’s department and the “officer”(telephone operator) said they would not look into it without a witness. After expressing how much the bird meant to us, she said they would possibly send someone out Monday that investigates livestock killings. I called WLPD and it sounds like they will be sending out an officer shortly. Hopefully we can get a print off the arrow and prosecute who did this.

The same turkey was shot by an arrow about a year ago, but that time it was in it’s buttocks and the arrow came out after 2 months.
Last year write up

These turkeys have been written up in the Oregonian (outdoors section - bill munroe), as well as the West Linn Tidings Police Blotter. They are loved by many in the community and we fear this could be the last Tom, thus ending their ability to breed any future generations. His killing was absolutely senseless.

OK, are you ready for the action video?  Hit the play button on the bottom left for good wood action. This is Grant on The Unicorn, slaying a dragon sized round!

Ohh what an exciting year it was!  I fell 2 of 4 trees the exact opposite way so there’s plenty of room for improvement next year.  Good exercise though, and it all goes toward something good.  Hope we have enough to keep the folks warm over the winter as the woods will be shut down in a week once the rain comes.

Logging with trouble…

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Today was interesting.  My father lined up a day of logging in our woods to offset the high oil prices.  He found a helper to show up at 10AM from an local AA meeting.  The new guy and I greeted each other and headed down to the woods.  Amongst small talk I asked him what he was doing this week.  ”Going to jail” he replied.  ”Really?  For how long?” I asked.  ”6 months”.  He said it very calmly, and I later found he had been in trouble plenty of times before.  He told me about his problems with drugs and alcohol, and his bender that lost him his job and sent him to jail.  I left thinking how lucky I am to be free and to really appreciate the time I have.  He left having helped some people and making a change for the better before he’s forced to.
